FAQs
WHEN CAN MY STUDENT TAKE DRIVER'S ED?
Breaking down the Driver’s Education Timeline
- Students MUST be 14 ½ years old to sit for driver’s education per the DMV.
- Students can obtain their initial learner’s permit on their 15th birthday, but they need to have completed the 30-hour classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving.
- In order for a student to be eligible for their license on their 16th birthday, they need to have completed the 60 additional hours of supervised driving required by the DMV. Parents or other designated adults over the age of 21 may provide this.
For example, if your child turns 14 on January 3rd, they can enroll in Driver’s Education for start dates on or after July 3rd.
If they want to get their license on their 16th birthday, they need to have gotten their permit no later than April 3rd of the year they are 15.
When is your child eligible to take Driver’s Education? When is the last date they could take it and still get their license on their 16th birthday?

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
- Summers Driving School LLC does our best to be upfront about our policies and procedures. If you have questions that are not answered here or elsewhere on our website, please call us for clarification.
- Students must have reached at least the age of 14 years and 6 months to be in the class. If the student wishes to attend as soon as they are of age, please contact us shortly after their 14th birthday to begin the registration process.
- Students may not take the complete Teen Driver Education course if they are going to reach their 18th birthday before they complete their behind-the-wheel driving time. ANY STUDENT WHO IS 18 OR OLDER MUST HAVE THEIR PERMIT TO BE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF ANY VEHICLE INCLUDING WITH A LICENSED DRIVER EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR.
- Payment plans are available. First payment is due the first night/day of class. Remaining payments can be made during the duration of the class. Completion certificate will not be issued to student if all fees have not been paid by the end of the course.
- Students DO NOT have to wait until they are finished with the classroom hours to begin behind-the-wheel. We will discuss their driving scheduled with you and get them behind-the-wheel as soon as we can agree on scheduled times.
- Behind-the-wheel driving is scheduled for the oldest students first, when their schedule accommodates it. However, because our classes are smaller than many schools and we do concurrent behind-the-wheel, our behind-the-wheel hours are usually complete within the same month the student begins the course.
- Students who miss a class can make up that time during another scheduled class session. We are flexible with schedules and track attendance based on hours as well as topics covered, so doing a makeup class is easy.
